While Grenache is the undisputed king of our lands, the Gigondas appellation holds a trade secret known only to the most discerning enthusiasts: the possibility of using up to 13 different grape varieties. This exceptional diversity is a palette of colors, textures, and aromas that allows for the composition of wines with rare complexity.
Like its neighbor Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas permits a wide variety of grapes. This rule is no coincidence: it allows winemakers to adapt to the mosaic of soils (safres, marl, limestone pebbles) found at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Each variety brings its own "spice" to the final blend.
The structure of a Gigondas relies on a major trio that defines its identity:
Grenache Noir: Present at over 50%, it brings generosity, roundness, and ripe red fruit aromas.
Syrah: It offers deep color, elegant structure, and notes of black pepper and violet.
Mourvèdre: This sun-loving variety provides solid tannins and an aromatic complexity (undergrowth, leather) ideal for aging.
The 10 other grape varieties, though more discreet, act as "terroir enhancers." These include ancient and noble varieties:
The Reds: Cinsault (finesse), Counoise (spice), Muscardin, Terret Noir, Vaccarèse, and Piquepoul Noir.
The Whites: Even in the reds, a touch of Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, or Picardan can be integrated to bring brightness, tension, and subtle freshness.
At Domaine les Teyssonnières, we wanted to take this tradition to its peak. Our Cuvée Alexandre is one of the few in Gigondas to bring together all 13 authorized grape varieties in a single bottle. This is a feat that requires perfect knowledge of every plot. By blending the power of the pillars with the finesse of the rare varieties, we create a wine of absolute depth—a true mirror of our vineyard’s biodiversity.
Working with 13 varieties is a task for a goldsmith. For us, it is the best way to guarantee the balance of our wines in the face of climate variations and to preserve the aromatic complexity that has made Gigondas world-famous.
