Gigondas: The Miracle of the Sands and the 140-Year-Old Vines of Domaine Les Teyssonnières
Sand Soils 'Saffre' and Pre-Phylloxera Vines: The Secret Behind the Exceptional Wines of Domaine Les Teyssonnières"
In the prestigious world of the Gigondas appellation, some terroirs whisper stories older than others. At Domaine Les Teyssonnières, excellence is never left to chance. It is rooted in a rare duality: the airy lightness of sand soils (saffre) and the incredible resilience of nearly 140-year-old pre-phylloxera vines. Discover how this sandy terroir and historical heritage make our cuvées the jewels of the southern Rhône Valley.
The Safre: Elegance Born from the Sands of Gigondas
While the majority of the appellation rests on clay-limestone soils, Domaine Les Teyssonnières draws its strength from its sandy terroirs, known locally as 'saffres'. This sandstone-based sand is a vestige from the era when the sea still covered our lands in Provence.
The Agronomic Benefits of Sand
Unlike heavy clays, sand offers unique properties for vine cultivation:
Drainage and Drying: Its high permeability allows for rapid drying after rainfall, minimizing the risk of diseases linked to excess moisture.
Thermal Regulation: The sand effectively stores solar energy during the day to prolong the vines' vegetative activity, while preventing soil overheating, which ensures a slow and balanced ripening process.
Wine Profile: Our vines grown on sand produce wines of incomparable finesse, with silky tannins and an aromatic freshness (red fruits, fine spices) that contrasts with the classic power of Gigondas.
140-Year-Old Pre-Phylloxera Vines: A Geological Miracle
It is the estate's best-kept secret. While the phylloxera aphid devastated European vineyards at the end of the 19th century, the sandy plots of Domaine Les Teyssonnières survived
How Did the Sand Save Our Vines
The phylloxera aphid lays larvae that must burrow through the soil to feed on the roots. In our entirely sandy soils, these tunnels instantly collapse on the insect, smothering it before it can ever reach the vine. Thanks to this natural rampart, we cultivate nearly 140-year-old vines known as 'ungrafted' (franc de pied):
Pure Expression: Without the barrier of a rootstock, the sap flows freely, offering an original and authentic expression of the grape variety.
Rare Complexity: These 'old ladies' produce small, concentrated berries, drawing a spectacular intensity from deep within the soil.
A Microclimate Sculpted by the Dentelles de Montmirail
Nestled at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, the estate thrives under an ideal Mediterranean climate. The imposing mountain range tempers the intensity of the morning sun, slowing the ripening of the Grenache to allow its full nobility to emerge.
Swept by the Mistral wind and benefiting from a western exposure, our vineyard enjoys optimal aeration. This natural "breath" preserves the health of the grapes and maintains a perfect balance between acidity and maturity.
The diversity of the 13 grape varieties combined with our time-honored expertise.
Our commitment to biodiversity is reflected in the presence of 13 different grape varieties within our vineyard. This precious heritage dates back to the very first set of specifications established when we were granted Cru des Côtes du Rhône status.
Precision Craftsmanship: From Cellar to Blending
To honor this diversity, we tailor our winemaking to each variety:
Separate Vinification: Our primary grapes—such as Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Clairette—are vinified individually. This meticulous approach preserves the essence and unique character (typicity) of each variety.
Co-fermentation of Rare Varieties: The remaining grape varieties are vinified together, creating a complex harmony right from the start of the fermentation process.
Cuvée ALEXANDRE: The Estate’s Flagship Wine
The final blending takes place after fermentation, giving birth to our emblematic single-plot wine: Cuvée ALEXANDRE. A true synthesis of our diversity and singularity, this wine is by no means the result of a fixed recipe.
Did you know? Cuvée Alexandre is subject to the whims of the climate. Because we prioritize absolute quality, its production is not guaranteed every year and depends entirely on what the vintage offers us.
