How long should you keep a Gigondas from Domaine les Teyssonnières? Our cellaring guide

This is the question on the mind of every Southern Rhône Valley fine wine enthusiast after acquiring one of our bottles: how long should you age a Gigondas from Domaine les Teyssonnières to bring out its absolute quintessence? Crafted from an exceptional terroir, our racy red wines possess a tremendous aging potential. Discover the secrets behind our Gigondas' evolution over the years, along with our expert advice on how to cellar it in optimal conditions.

An exceptional aging potential

Thanks to the altitude of our vineyards and the freshness brought by the very special microclimate of the Dentelles de Montmirail, our Grenache grapes benefit from a slow ripening process. This gives our wine a solid tannic structure and a beautiful acidity—two essential elements for standing the test of time.

  • Between 1 and 4 years: Fiery youth. The wine fully expresses its fresh fruit. It features intense notes of fresh and ripe red berries (cherry, blackberry), licorice, and spices. The tannins are present and vigorous.
  • From the 5th year onward: Harmony. This is the ideal time to start opening your bottles. The wine mellows out, the tannins round off, and the bouquet gains in complexity.
  • Between 8 and 12 years: The peak. This is the window of excellence for our classic Gigondas, our Cuvée Alexandre, and our 100% Grenache. The wine becomes superb, revealing silky notes of undergrowth, truffle, cocoa, and candied fruits.

The winemaker's advice: While great vintages can proudly exceed 15 years of cellar aging, our Gigondas reveals itself to be particularly sumptuous around its 8th to 10th year.

How to properly store your bottles of Gigondas?

Voici une traduction soignée, fluide et percutante pour vos 4 règles d'or de conservation :

Time only does its magic if the wine is kept in the right conditions. To ensure your Gigondas from Domaine les Teyssonnières ages to perfection, make sure to follow these 4 golden rules:

  • A stable temperature: The ideal range is between 11°C and 13°C. Sudden temperature fluctuations are the wine's worst enemy.

  • Controlled humidity: A humidity level between 60% and 70% maintains the elasticity of the cork and guarantees a perfect seal.

  • Total darkness: Direct light (especially UV rays) can prematurely alter the wine's delicate aromas.

  • Horizontal storage: Bottles must be kept lying down so that the wine remains in constant contact with the cork, preventing it from drying out and letting in too much air.

How to serve an aged Gigondas?

If you have had the patience to cellar your bottle from Domaine les Teyssonnières for several years, give it the service it deserves:

  • Serving temperature: Serve it between 16°C and 18°C. Too cold, and its complex aromas will remain closed; too warm, and the alcohol will overpower the wine.

  • Aeration: For a young vintage (under 5 years old), decanting it for an hour will do it a world of good. For an older bottle (8 years and up), simply uncork it 1 to 2 hours before the meal to let the wine gently oxygenate.

  • Food and wine pairings: Its evolved structure and spicy notes will wonderfully accompany game, a fine cut of grilled beef, or a platter of aged cheeses.
